Aristotelian Society
The Society is a historically peculiar institution. It originated with non-academic philosophy enthusiasts sharing papers and inviting speakers. This has set the informal character of the series that has persisted to this day.
Since 1995 the Society has enjoyed a close relationship with, and held its meetings at, the Institute of Philosophy (School of Advanced Study - University of London).
In addition to our meetings in London, we co-host the Joint Session with the Mind Association: one of the UK's largest philosophy conferences that has, since 1918, taken place at universities across the UK and in Ireland. Inaugrated by the President of the Mind Association, the Joint Session includes symposia, open and postgraduate sessions, and is held within a span of three days.
The Society is run by its Executive Committee, which, in turn, is overseen by its Council. The latter consists of past Presidents of the Society.
Many distinguished philosophers have served as President. For a complete list click here.
The Society's full name is 'The Aristotelian Society for the systematic study of philosophy'. According to H. Wildon Carr (President 1915-1918), 'It was ... essential to find a name which would definitely prescribe the speculative character of the study which was to be the Society's ideal, and it seemed that this could best be secured by adopting the name of a philosopher eminently representative. There is only one such name in the history of philosophy and so we became the Aristotelian Society, not for the special study of Aristotle, or of Aristotelianism, but for the systematic study of Philosophy' (Wildon Carr, 'The Fiftieth Session: A Retrospect', PAS Vol XXIX 1928-9 p. 361).
