One of the salient paradoxes is the contrast between the tremendous
proliferation and occasional vociferousness in international forums
such as EU,of small and weak states as Greece on the one hand,
and the precariousness of their INTERNATIONAL STATUS,
security and autonomus existence on the other.
The nationalist fervor of the small states points to their aspiration to
develop along lines approximating the model of nation-state
domestically and it certainly fulfills a compensatory function in
connection with their international WEAKNESS.
Even in a shrinking world of interdependence and transnationalism,
the traditional STATE-CENTRIC paradigm of political realism has
not lost its relevance,at least as an aspiration, and continues to
provide the basic framework for the behaviour of states.
