Phaedrus by Plato

Lysias is reported by Phaedrus as having argued that :

" it is better to be loved by one who does not love than by one who does "

for the lover is moved by passion and can do harm.

Socrates at first agrees that :

" love is irrational and therefore harmful ",

but on reflection he maintains that :

" madness is sometime divine,and that love is a kind of divine madness ".

The soul is like a winged charioteer driving a team of horses ;

the charioteer,if inspired by love of the ideal,

"is reason or intelligence in control of the good horse -Will- and the bad horse -Passion-".

Souls which have seen the most of Being,

having known the eternal forms or Ideas of all things,

pass into the bodies of philosophers,or lovers of wisdom ;

souls which are disciplined and full of wisdom return to their heavenly home.

Good rhetoric depends on having true knowledge ;

the Sophists are mistaken in claiming that

"the appearance of knowledge is all that is necessary".

High culture !

High culture is a term, now used in a number of different ways in academic discourse, whose most common meaning is the set of culturalproducts, mainly in the arts, held in the highest esteem by a culture. In more popular terms, it is the culture of an elite such as thearistocracy or intelligentsia. It is contrasted with the low culture or popular culture of, variously, the less well-educated, barbarians,philistines or the masses.

Much of High Culture consists of the appreciation of what is sometimes called High Art. This term is rather broader than Arnold's definition and besides Literature includes Music, Visual arts, especially Painting, and traditional forms of the Performing arts, now including someCinema. The Decorative arts would not generally be considered High art.

The cultural products most regarded as forming part of High culture are most likely to have been produced during periods of High civilization, for which a large, sophisticated and wealthy urban-based society provides a coherent & conscious aesthetic framework, and a large-scale milieu of training, and, for the visual arts, sourcing materials and financing work. All this is so that the artist is able, as near as possible, to realize his creative potential with as few as possible practical and technical constraints. Although the Western concept of High Culture naturally concentrates on the Graeco-Roman tradition, and its resumption from the Renaissance onwards, it would normally be recognised that such conditions existed in other places at other times. A tentative list of High Cultures, or cultures producing High art, might therefore be:

Civilized Core

Civilized Core refers to the four advanced civilizations that emerged during the 1st millennium BCE, during the earlier Iron Age after the collapse of the Bronze Age civilizations that preceded them.

These were, in no particular order, the civilizations of

Zhou China, culminating in the Han Empire in the 3rd century BCE
Mesopotamia (Babylonia and Assyria), culminating in the unified Achaemenid Empire in the 6th century BCE
Iron Age India, the Mahajanapadas culminating in the Maurya Empire in the 4th century BCE
The Mediterranean, developing from scattered Phoenician settlements to the emergence of Ancient Greece in the 7th century BCE and culminating in the Hellenistic civilization in the 4th century BCE, by the 3rd century BCE streching its influence throughout the Mesopotamian and into the Indian sphere.

Righteous man.

Beit is numerically equal to the word "ta'avah," which means "desire" or "passion".
In several places "ta'avah" denotes the positive passion of the tzadik, the righteous man.
One passage in Proverbs states:
"He will fulfill the passion of the tzadik,"
and a second says:
"the passions of tzadikim are only good."
The "ta'avah" of G-d, the "Tzadik of the world," is altogether above reason and logic. At this level one cannot ask "why."
As expressed by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi:
"About passion, there can be no question." As G-d is the essence of good so His passion is "only good."

Why Philosophy ?

This will be, necessarily, a very personal answer to the question.
We are all philosophers, although we might not call ourselves by that title.
Anyone has a personal selection of important philosophical works -the most important philosophical works that one should read in order to gain a deeper insight into the discipline as a whole-.
In fact, philosophy is hard to avoid, even with conscious effort.
Any statement one can make about philosophy will come from some set of values or beliefs, which are of course, phiosophical questions themselves.
So we're all philosophers to some extent, and all people have been since the dawn of consicousness, when the "naked ape" began to think about what he or she was doing, and how they were doing it and to what end they were doing it. These are the questions that indicate a higher consciousness than that of the other animals, and theyare the beginning of phiosophy.

Classical Studies

The word classical has several meanings. In general, these meanings refer to some past time, works of that time or later works influenced by that time. Classical things are often seen as ordered and part of high culture or a golden age, and contrasted to earlier or later things which may be seen as chaotic, elaborate or emotional.

Classical antiquity is a long period of history centered on the Mediterranean Sea, comprising the interlocking civilizations of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. This period is conventionally taken to stretch from roughly the 7th or 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. It is often seen as a golden age of Western civilisation, preceding the Dark Ages of the early medieval period.

The word classical can refer to something from classical antiquity. For example:

A Classical scholar is someone who studies the Classics - the language and culture of classical antiquity, particularly its literature.
Classical philosophy
Classical mythology
Classical Latin is the form of the Latin language used by the ancient Romans in what is usually regarded as classical Latin literature. It is distinct from both vulgar Latin and medieval Latin. This distinction from vulgar Latin is in keeping with the meaning of the Latin word classicus given above.
Classical architecture
- Classical order - one of the ancient styles of building design in the classical tradition. Originally Doric, Ionic and Corinthian, these were added to and modified by the Romans.
High classical refers to Greek art associated mainly with Athens and the works atop the Acropolis
A classical education normally means an education in the classics, including learning Latin and ancient Greek. However, is can refer to the Classical education movement.
The word classical can also be used to refer to other cultures, by analogy with classical antiquity and classical music. Examples of this usage include:
- Classical language, a dead or archaic language comparable to classical Latin. This normally means it has a literature that is considered classical, it is associated with a golden age, it was spoken by high-status people or it is considered to be ordered. Examples illustrating this are given below:
  - Classical Arabic is the Arabic language in which the Qur'an is written
  - Classical Nahuatl is the language spoken by Aztec nobles in the Valley of Mexico at the time of the 16th-century Spanish conquest
  - Classical French is the French language as systematised in the 17th and 18th centuries
- Four Great Classical Novels, considered to be the greatest and most influential in Chinese fiction
- The list of classical music styles gives many styles of music considered classical.

The Brain

The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. It produces our every thought, action, memory, feeling and experience of the world. This jelly-like mass of tissue, weighing in at around 1.4 kilograms, contains a staggering one hundred billion nerve cells, or neurons.

The complexity of the connectivity between these cells is mind-boggling. Each neuron can make contact with thousands or even tens of thousands of others, via tiny structures called synapses. Our brains form a million new connections for every second of our lives. The pattern and strength of the connections is constantly changing and no two brains are alike.

It is in these changing connections that memories are stored, habits learnedand personalities shaped, by reinforcing certain patterns of brain activity, and losing others.

Grey matter

While people often speak of their "grey matter", the brain also contains white matter. The grey matter is the cell bodies of the neurons, while the white matter is the branching network of thread-like tendrils - called dendrites andaxons - that spread out from the cell bodies to connect to other neurons.

But the brain also has another, even more numerous type of cell, called glial cells. These outnumber neurons ten times over. Once thought to be support cells, they are now known to amplify neural signals and to be as important as neurons in mental calculations. There are many different types of neuron, only one of which is unique to humans and the other great apes, the so calledspindle cells.

Brain structure is shaped partly by genes, but largely by experience. Only relatively recently it was discovered that new brain cells are being bornthroughout our lives - a process called neurogenesis. The brain has bursts of growth and then periods of consolidation, when excess connections are pruned. The most notable bursts are in the first two or three years of life, during puberty, and also a final burst in young adulthood.

How a brain ages also depends on genes and lifestyle too. Exercising the brain and giving it the right diet can be just as important as it is for the rest of the body.

Chemical messengers

The neurons in our brains communicate in a variety of ways. Signals pass between them by the release and capture of neurotransmitter andneuromodulator chemicals, such as glutamate, dopamine, acetylcholine,noradrenalin, serotonin and endorphins.

Some neurochemicals work in the synapse, passing specific messages from release sites to collection sites, called receptors. Others also spread their influence more widely, like a radio signal, making whole brain regions more or less sensitive.

These neurochemicals are so important that deficiencies in them are linked to certain diseases. For example, a loss of dopamine in the basal ganglia, which control movements, leads to Parkinson's disease. It can also increase susceptibility to addiction because it mediates our sensations of reward and pleasure.

Similarly, a deficiency in serotonin, used by regions involved in emotion, can be linked to depression or mood disorders, and the loss of acetylcholine in the cerebral cortex is characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.

Brain scanning

Within individual neurons, signals are formed by electrochemical pulses. Collectively, this electrical activity can be detected outside the scalp by anelectroencephalogram (EEG).

These signals have wave-like patterns, which scientists classify from alpha (common while we are relaxing or sleeping), through to gamma (active thought). When this activity goes awry, it is called a seizure. Some researchers think that synchronising the activity in different brain regions isimportant in perception.

Other ways of imaging brain activity are indirect. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or positron emission tomography (PET) monitor blood flow. MRI scans, computed tomography (CT) scans and diffusion tensor images (DTI) use the magnetic signatures of different tissues, X-ray absorption, or the movement of water molecules in those tissues, to image the brain.

These scanning techniques have revealed which parts of the brain areassociated with which functions. Examples include activity related tosensations, movement, libido, choices, regrets, motivations and even racism. However, some experts argue that we put too much trust in these results and that they raise privacy issues.

Before scanning techniques were common, researchers relied on patients with brain damage caused by strokes, head injuries or illnesses, to determine which brain areas are required for certain functions. This approach exposed the regions connected to emotions, dreams, memory, language andperception and to even more enigmatic events, such as religious or "paranormal" experiences.

One famous example was the case of Phineas Gage, a 19^th century railroad worker who lost part of the front of his brain when a 1-metre-long iron pole was blasted through his head during an explosion. He recovered physically, but was left with permanent changes to his personality, showing for the first time that specific brain regions are linked to different processes.

Structure in mind

The most obvious anatomical feature of our brains is the undulating surfac of the cerebrum - the deep clefts are known as sulci and its folds are gyri. The cerebrum is the largest part of our brain and is largely made up of the twocerebral hemispheres. It is the most evolutionarily recent brain structure, dealing with more complex cognitive brain activities.

It is often said that the right hemisphere is more creative and emotional and the left deals with logic, but the reality is more complex. Nonetheless, the sides do have some specialisations, with the left dealing with speech and language, the right with spatial and body awareness.

Further anatomical divisions of the cerebral hemispheres are the occipital lobeat the back, devoted to vision, and the parietal lobe above that, dealing withmovement, position, orientation and calculation.

Behind the ears and temples lie the temporal lobes, dealing with sound and speech comprehension and some aspects of memory. And to the fore are the frontal and prefrontal lobes, often considered the most highly developed and most "human" of regions, dealing with the most complex thought, decision making, planning, conceptualising, attention control and working memory. They also deal with complex social emotions such as regret, morality andempathy.

Another way to classify the regions is as sensory cortex and motor cortex, controlling incoming information, and outgoing behaviour respectively.

Below the cerebral hemispheres, but still referred to as part of the forebrain, is the cingulate cortex, which deals with directing behaviour and pain. And beneath this lies the corpus callosum, which connects the two sides of the brain. Other important areas of the forebrain are the basal ganglia, responsible for movement, motivation and reward.

Urges and appetites

Beneath the forebrain lie more primitive brain regions. The limbic system, common to all mammals, deals with urges and appetites. Emotions are most closely linked with structures called the amygdala, caudate nucleus andputamen. Also in the limbic brain are the hippocampus - vital for forming new memories; the thalamus - a kind of sensory relay station; and thehypothalamus, which regulates bodily functions via hormone release from thepituitary gland.

The back of the brain has a highly convoluted and folded swelling called thecerebellum, which stores patterns of movement, habits and repeated tasks - things we can do without thinking about them.

The most primitive parts, the midbrain and brain stem, control the bodily functions we have no conscious control of, such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and so on. They also control signals that pass between the brain and the rest of the body, through the spinal cord.

Though we have discovered an enormous amount about the brain, huge andcrucial mysteries remain. One of the most important is how does the brain produces our conscious experiences?

The vast majority of the brain's activity is subconscious. But our consciousthoughts, sensations and perceptions - what define us as humans - cannot yet be explained in terms of brain activity.

Gallery: Messages from the Stone Age

THE first intrepid explorers to brave the 7-metre crawl through a perilously narrow tunnel leading to the Chauvet caves in southern France were rewarded with magnificent artwork to rival any modern composition. Stretching a full 3 metres in height, the paintings depict a troupe of majestic horses in deep colours, above a pair of boisterous rhinos in the midst of a fight. To the left, they found the beautiful rendering of a herd of prehistoric cows. "The horse heads just seem to leap out of the wall towards you," says Jean Clottes, former director of scientific research at the caves and one of the few people to see the paintings with his own eyes.

When faced with such spectacular beauty, who could blame the visiting anthropologists for largely ignoring the modest semicircles, lines and zigzags also marked on the walls? Yet dismissing them has proved to be something of a mistake. The latest research has shown that, far from being doodles, the marks are in fact highly symbolic, forming a written "code" that was familiar to all of the prehistoric tribes around France and possibly beyond. Indeed, these unprepossessing shapes may be just as remarkable as the paintings of trotting horses and tussling rhinos, providing a snapshot into humankind's first steps towards symbolism and writing.

Until now, the accepted view has been that our ancestors underwent a "creative explosion" around 30,000 to 40,000 years ago, when they suddenly began to think abstractly and create rock art. This idea is supported by the plethora of stunning cave paintings, like those at Chauvet, which started to proliferate across Europe around this time. Writing, on the other hand, appeared to come much later, with the earliest records of a pictographic writing system dating back to just 5000 years ago.

Few researchers, though, had given any serious thought to the relatively small and inconspicuous marks around the cave paintings. The evidence of humanity's early creativity, they thought, was clearly in the elaborate drawings.

While some scholars like Clottes had recorded the presence of cave signs at individual sites, Genevieve von Petzinger, then a student at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, was surprised to find that no one had brought all these records together to compare signs from different caves. And so, under the supervision of April Nowell, also at the University of Victoria, she devised an ambitious masters project. She compiled a comprehensive database of all recorded cave signs from 146 sites in France, covering 25,000 years of prehistory from 35,000 to 10,000 years ago.

What emerged was startling: 26 signs, all drawn in the same style, appeared again and again at numerous sites (see illustration). Admittedly, some of the symbols are pretty basic, like straight lines, circles and triangles, but the fact that many of the more complex designs also appeared in several places hinted to von Petzinger and Nowell that they were meaningful - perhaps even the seeds of written communication.

What emerged was startling - 26 signs, all drawn in the same style, appeared again and again

A closer look confirmed their suspicions. When von Petzinger went back to some of the records of the cave walls, she noticed other, less abstract signs that appeared to represent a single part of a larger figure - like the tusks of a mammoth without an accompanying body. This feature, known as synecdoche, is common in the known pictographic languages. To von Petzinger and Nowell, it demonstrated that our ancestors were indeed considering how to represent ideas symbolically rather than realistically, eventually leading to the abstract symbols that were the basis of the original study.

"It was a way of communicating information in a concise way," says Nowell. "For example, the mammoth tusks may have simply represented a mammoth, or a mammoth hunt, or something that has nothing to do with a literal interpretation of mammoths." Other common forms of synecdoche include two concentric circles or triangles (used as eyes in horse and bison paintings), ibex horns and the hump of a mammoth. The claviform figure - which looks somewhat like a numeral 1 - may even be a stylised form of the female figure, she says.

The real clincher came with the observation that certain signs appear repeatedly in pairs. Negative hands and dots tend to be one of the most frequent pairings, for example, especially during a warm climate period known as the Gravettian (28,000 to 22,000 years ago). One site called Les Trois-Frères in the French Pyrenees, even shows four sign types grouped together: negative hands, dots, finger fluting and thumb stencils (a rare subcategory of the negative hands).

Grouping is typically seen in early pictographic languages - the combined symbols representing a new concept - and the researchers suspect that prehistoric Europeans had established a similar system. "The consistency of the pairings indicate that they could really have had a meaning," says Nowell. "We are perhaps seeing the first glimpses of a rudimentary language system."

A Syntopicon: An Index to The Great Ideas (1952) is a two-volume index, published as volumes 1 and 2 of Encyclopaedia Britannica’s collection Great Books of the Western World. Compiled by Mortimer Adler, an American philosopher, under the guidance of Robert Hutchins, president of the University of Chicago, the volumes were billed as a collection of the 102 great ideas of the western canon. The term “syntopicon” was coined specifically for this undertaking, meaning “a collection of topics.”^[1] The volumes catalogued what Adler and his team deemed to be the fundamental ideas contained in the works of the Great Books of the Western World, which stretched chronologically from Homer to Freud. The Syntopicon lists, under each idea, where every occurrence of the concept can be located in the collection’s famous works.

Jacques Maritain Center
At the University of Notre Dame. The Center has a number of on-line texts of interest. For a list of the filenames of available texts, go to their etext directory. The file names there are abbreviated, so you'll have to explore to see what you are interested in. Here are a few representative things: (a) an encyclopedia article, "St. Thomas Aquinas and Medieval Philosophy"; (b) the (somewhat abridged) Rickaby translation of Aquinas' Summa contra gentiles. Scholasticon
A site dedicated to the study of Late Scholasticism, both Catholic and Protestant (XVIth-XVIIth centuries). Includes a growing database of authors with bio-biographical descriptions, often unique, a book review section, an e-mail directory and links to useful instutitions. The working language of the site is French, but it is open to contributions in any language.
Philosophia Medii Aevi
A very useful site, maintained at the Dipartimento di Filosofia, Università di Lecce. Contains announcements of upcoming congresses and meetings, information on current research projects, editions in progress, links to electronic texts and other helpful information.

Fabienne Pironet's page for William Heytesbury's Sophismata.
Pironet is preparing a critical edition of this important work. In the meantime, the present webpage contains a transcription of the whole of Heytesbury's Sophismata, from the Venice edition of 1494 (Bonetus Locatellus for Octavianus Scotus), in Adobe PDF format. The page also contains a list of the sophisms treated in the work, a list of the manuscripts containing theSophismata, and a PDF file containing a bibliography of works and articles on Heytesbury.
Center for Medieval and Renaissance Natural Philosophy.
This is a research center, founded in 1998, to promote the study of natural philosophy and science in its formative period between the late Middle Ages and the seventeenth century. It is associated with the Department of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at Nijmegen University, and integrates the research activities of six fellows who are attached to the research program "From Artes to Science: The Commentary Literature on Aristotle's Physics, 1250-1700," funded by the
Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Each year, it also provides fellowships to two or three post-doctorate scholars from abroad, organizes symposia and annual lecture series, and edits the journal Early Science and Medicine.
The Electronic Grosseteste.
Run by James Ginther (Leeds), this is an outstanding example of the possibilities of electronic scholarship. Contains viewable and downloable HTML files of Grosseteste's Latin works now in the public domain (includeing the Bauer edition). It will soon include bibliographical aids, and a searchable database of XML copyrighted texts (including some of his Aristotelian commentaries). Mandatory for everyone interested in Grosseteste.

Thomas Aquinas's Summa theologiae.
The popular "English Dominican" translation (no Latin). The various sections of the Summa can be viewed here right on-screen in HTML format.
The Early Church Fathers.
This is a downloadable version of the well-known three-part set of English translations: "The Ante-Nicene, Nicene, and Post-Nicene Fathers," described as a "thirty-eight volume collection of writings from the first 800 years of the Church." The texts are in plain ASCII format, in compressed "zip" files (containing the ASCII text), in WinHelp format, and in Adobe "pdf" format. (Not all texts are available in all these forms.) An alternative site for finding these texts (arranged slightly differently) is located at the New Advent Catholic Website.
The Catholic Encyclopedia.
Also at the "New Advent Catholic Supersite" maintained by the Knights of Columbus. A partially completed on-line version of the original edition published in 1913 (although the dates on individual volumes may vary). They are looking for volunteers to contribute to this project by converting various articles for on-line use.

There is a link here to a list of holdings of the Translation Clearing House (Walter G. Scott, Director:wscott@okway.okstate.edu.) The idea behind the Translation Clearing House is simple: Many of us have prepared translations of various texts that we use in our courses and elsewhere. If they are useful to us, they will probably be useful to other people too. The Clearing House is a depository of such translations. They are available to all interested parties on a demand basis, for what amounts to the mere cost of duplicating and mailing. If you have translations of your own that you would be willing to contribute (don't be shy!), please help out. (The translator's rights are protected, and suitable provisions are made for withdrawing your texts, if necessary, if they appear in print elsewhere.) Medieval Psychological Sources on the Internet
Links to online versions of medieval commentaries on the De anima. Mainly digitized versions of early printed texts, but other kinds of materials are there as well. Maintained by Pekka Kärkkäinen.

Software for scholars:

"Abbreviationes" (TM) project.
This is an electronic database of mediaeval Latin palaeographical abbreviations, going far beyond Cappelli/Pelzer and similar printed manuals. Available on CD-ROM (Windows and Mac). All licenses include access Abbreviationes Online, a device-independent and OS agnostic site that needs only a web browser.
Critical Edition Typesetter (CET).
A typesetting program that converts suitably marked-up ASCII text-files into a PostScript file suitable for printing either on your personal printer or on a professional photo-typesetter. (TeX files are generated as an intermediary step.) The program comes with screen previewers (VGA) and a PostScript emulator for common printers. Up to nine independent footnote series are possible (justified or unjustified, two or three columns), calculation of line numbers and cross-references, etc. And it's very reasonably priced, too. New features include the ability to deal with Arabic and Hebrew texts. Note: Available in PC-IBM format only (80386 or better). The actual program cannot be downloaded here, but you can find out all about it, including how to order a copy.
Classical Text Editor (CTE).
A Windows only word-processor program for producing critical editions, developed by Stefan Hagel in cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Sciences and used for editions published by the Corpus scriptorum ecclesiasticorum latinorum(CSEL). Despite its name, The program can just as easily be used for editions of non-classical texts. It supports multiple apparatus and sets of notes, uses a WYSIWYG interface and produces camera-ready copy. Recent versions support right-to-left entry (Hebrew and Arabic). A demo version is available for downloading, for either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95/NT. (The demo is a full-featured version of the program, except that the printing feature produces output with 'Unregistered version of Classical Text Editor' printed all over the top of your text. An effective deterrent to piracy, but it still lets you see just what the program can do.) The program is frequently upgraded, with new features being added continually, so check back with the above Website often. Note that the price quoted there is an institutional price; there is a substantialdiscount for individual buyers. Users of CTE should also note the entry for Typographica Academica Traiectina, below.

Kalos.
Here's something all readers of Greek will appreciate! A nifty freeware classical Greek verb-conjugator! For 32-bit Windows only. Those who (like me) secretly use Tutti i verbi Grecci all the time know how indispensable such an aid is. Developed by Gonzalo Diaz and Mariana Esplugas (Buenos Aires). (The utility comes with its own Greek TTF font.)
Typographica Academica Traiectina.
A typesetting company located in Utrecht, and specializing in high-quality TeX typography, especially for publications such as critical and multi-language editions. Users of "Classical Text Editor" (CTE) — see above — will be happy to learn that it will soon be possible for Typographica Academica Traiectina to publish directly from files prepared using CTE.
Imprimatur
A shareware markup language interpreter used to publish critical editions. Imprimatur requires Microsoft Windows 95 or higher, and Microsoft Word 95 or higher. It supports two series of variants, occurrence numbering in variants, linear or contiguous citations and text below the line (Additions). Number schemes include: line numbers, paragraph numbers, and Wadding numbers. References in the margins are also supported. The shareware version is not crippled in any way, but registered users get the help documentation. Students are permitted to use the program without charge for coursework. Samples of the output are available on the website.

Researchproject of L.M. de Rijk and E.P. Bos: Medieval Logical Manuscripts
This is a gold mine! A searchable database of medieval Latin texts on logic found in medieval manuscripts. The database is built around notes compiled by L.M. de Rijk throughout his distinguished career. E.P. Bos has overseen the enormous task of making this wealth of information available to the world on the Web. Texts and manuscripts represented date from 500 to 1500, and do not include copies of the ars vetus or ars nova, although they do include commentaries on works in the ars vetus and the ars nova. Dr. Bos welcomes additions and corrections, so by all means visit this site and help make it as useful as possible.
World Microfilms.
A collection of microfilms, available for purchase, from many of the major British libraries and churches. Films are sold in sets, although individual reels are available separately. Lots here relevant to mediaeval philosophy, including logic.
