Logic is inquiry given a theoretical formulation ;
logical theory is the comprehensive theory of how people solve problems through conducting inquiries.

The process of inquiry involves the following stages :
1.the indeterminate situation,
a case of disturbed equilibrium between an organism and its environment ;
2.the institution of a problem,
the change of a situation from indeterminate to problematic as a result of the active interest of an inquirer ;
3.the setting up of a hypothesis,an anticipation of the consequences of certain operations ;
4.the deductive elaboration of the hypothesis,together with experimental testing ; and
5.the determination of inquiry,the establishment of a settled outcome ;
the situation has become determinate.

Universal propositions which have existential import
-which are about existing things-
differ from those which do not have such import,
but the difference is factual,not formal.
.
Since propositions are instruments used in the process of inquiry,
it is proper to characterize them as effective or ineffective,
rather than as true or false.

the experience is an experience.

an experience is an aesthetic experience.

Art is to be understood as an experience made possible by the organizing and unifying process in which the artist engages ;
the spectator meets the interest of the artist with an interest of his own in the reciprocal process of going through a similar operation.

Art supplies mediums of communication,
making community of experience possible.

All arts share a common form : they are organized toward a unified experience ;
they all operate through sensory mediums such as stone,water colors,oil paints,
and words ; and they are all concerned with space and time.

Moralities of the past were deficient in that they were based on ordinary rules rather than on a scientific understanding of human nature as formed within a social environment.

Human nature is continuous with the rest of nature ;
ethics is thus allied with physics and biology,and with sociology,law,and economics.

Vices and virtues are habits developed during the interaction of the human organism and the social environment.

Morals are ways of action invented to meet specific situations,
reactions to them become habits and acquire prescriptive character.
.
Education must enable the organism to modify its behavior in the face of novelty.
.
Reflection upon conduct has as its objective the satisfying resolution of a problem arising from the incompatability of various impulses.

Quest of certainty

In the past the quest of certainty,
to be achieved by the discovery of eternal truths and ultimate reality,
led to the misleading distinction between theory and practice.
