Novum Organum
..
To acquire knowledge about the world
one must interpret the particulars given in sense experience.
..
Various false ideas and methods have handicapped man
in his attempt to study nature impartially ;
they are IDOLS of the TRIBE
(conventional beliefs which satisfy the emotions),
the IDOLS of the CAVE
(erroneous conceptions resulting from individual predilections),
the IDOLS of the MARKET PLACE
(confused ideas resulting from the nonsensical or loose use of language),
and the IDOLS of the THEATRE
(various systems of philosophy or other dogmatic, improperly founded asertions).
..
The discovery,investigation,and explanation of Forms
(the properties of substances)
by controlled observation and experimentation,
utilizing tables of instances
by reference to which inductive generalizations can be made,
is the philosophical foundation of all knowledge.
